Some objects resist becoming something else.

This chair arrived with a broken seat and a missing spindle in the backrest. It was carefully dismantled, each component cleaned, stripped and sanded while preserving its original shape. A mould taken from one of the remaining spindles allowed the missing element to be recreated.

The new seat became an opportunity rather than a replacement. Instead of wood, it was cast from recycled plastic, creating a deliberate contrast between the chair’s first life and its new one.

Not every decision worked. The first cast cracked and had to be discarded. The second succeeded.

The biggest surprise came later.

After applying linseed oil, the old wood absorbed the finish unevenly. Marks appeared where I hadn’t expected them, disrupting the image I had carefully imagined. At first, it felt like failure.

Then we realised something simple: this chair had spent decades becoming what it was. It still had its own character, and it deserved to keep it.

Design sometimes begins the moment we stop trying to control everything.
